Men’s Top Fall Winter 2023 Styles

Changes in seasons means a change in trends. The cold weather allows us to layer up our best looks, so why not stay warm with the hottest trends for fall and winter? M.A.D. Shoppe has been keeping a sharp eye on fashion weeks from around the globe to bring to you the 5 best menswear trends for Fall/Winter 2023. This year’s trends have a contemporary twist on seasonal staples, giving more life to menswear with rebellious streetwear, reinvented classics and exaggerated elements to give your warm weather classics a breath of fresh air.

Larger than Life Collars

Who would’ve thought that a collar can be trendy? But this year's fall and winter trends don’t skimp out on the details. Menswear runways revealed that even an exaggerated collar can elevate a look, seen in all shapes and sizes on shirts, coats and sweaters, making the simplest pieces more interesting. Creative collars are a core element to the Montréal artist brand Coup D’État, offering statement collared shirts with wide lapels in bold colors. The brand is dedicated to creativity, creating collections to inspire revolution on the fashion front and they definitely started off right when it came to their colossal collared button downs. The trend mimics modern fashion as contemporary dressing and is all about experimenting with fit styles. Overexaggerated collars add dimension to a look and offer a more sophisticated and smart feel. It’s a subtle way to stand out as Amir, Prada, Loverboy and Cassablanca pointed out on their runways with their compelling collared looks.

Grungecore

Music and fashion go hand in hand so it’s no surprise that, this year, we’re seeing grunge looks dominate the runways. As of late, the grunge sound has infiltrated the music scene, appearing in all different genres from rap to pop, and it seems that the grunge look has also revived itself on runways, especially when it came to the men's shows this year. The trend emerged from the anti-mainstream rock stars of the 90s, making it rebellious in nature with a heavy influence from 90s punk aesthetic and casual street style. This year designers such as Egonlab and Valmora showed their grungiest looks on the runway with lots of leather, knitwear, plaid, acid wash denim and silver jewelry. It’s a modern spin on the punk movement categorized by layering pieces that don’t necessarily match or make sense. The trend is all about mixing patterns, textures and even styles. It’s a fun genderless trend that bends the rules, encouraging people to experiment. Montreal based designers know grungecore too well making it the central theme to their latest releases with Guillaume Chaigne releasing spray painted tees with political statements, Valmora’s knitwear pieces with visible hems and Mi-Carême’s acid wash denim collection.

Lengthy Layers

Another trend that showed their affinity for exaggerated elements was the extra long overcoat trend. Of course, overcoats are not new when it comes to men's fashion but the dramatic length gives it a contemporary twist. Adding more length to a classic coat adds a sort of extravagance to the overall look stretching the silhouette to give a more relaxed fit but luxe look. It’s a sophisticated play on comfort clothing, encouraging wearers to wrap themselves up this winter. More fabric also allows for more room for designs as Ami, Saint Laurent and Dolce & Gabbana showcased at their F/W23 shows with double breasted styles and deep oversized pockets. Montreal based designers Denis Gagnon,  and Oscar Mendoza also played around with the trend offering extra long overcoats and windbreakers to their collections. So cocoon in comfort and wrap yourself up to warmth this winter !

Bold Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets are back. Emerging from the Air Force uniform, the jacket is based in military style making it a clean, casual classic. Ever since its WWI debut, the jacket has always been a menswear staple when it comes to casual coats. Over the years, it has made its way back onto runways but never re-invented like it has this year. Designers such as Gucci, Rick Owens, Prada, and Montreal based brand 1er Mai all showcased their take on the American classic with different patterns, textures, and collars in both cropped and oversized fits. Bombers this year were seen in nylon and leather, with oversized sleeves compared to the usual neutral and fitted styles it usually comes in. There’s now a bomber that suits every style whether you’re going for a more luxurious look with a leather or sherpa collared bomber or a more grunge look with a plaid or acid wash bomber. No matter someone's individual aesthetic, there’s definitely a bomber jacket that can match their style, making it one of the most versatile jackets of the season.

Suit Up

Suits are a menswear staple no matter the season, but this year’s runways revamped the classic, especially in terms of tailoring with exaggerated fits for a more modern look. Traditionally, suits are perfectly tailored, but this year, we’re seeing the oversized trend make its way to the suit game with baggy blazers, wider lapels and flared pants to create a more relaxed contemporary fit. Often in the double breasted style, oversized suits were seen in various colors and patterns (especially in the ultra trendy plaid). Montreal based designer Oscar Mendoza  experimented this trend with his Golden Bespoke Suit, the oversized metallic gold reptile print jacket containing a beaded scorpio to make it the perfect statement piece. No matter the design, an oversized suit is a great way to spice up evening wear. It’s a re-imagined classic making it perfect for the holiday season. So go big or go home when suit shopping this fall and winter !
